Random Thought: Stop Looking for the Direct Payoff

The more long-term oriented you are, the better you will be off in the long term. The reason why we are so short-term oriented is because thinking years into the future is difficult, and instant gratification is easy. Yet, the experiences that provide me with the most joy are those which I set myself up to be able to have years ago.

In the time that we spend worrying about the present – how to pay the bills, we often forget to take care of the problems we will have in the future.

So what do you do? Start early. Think long-term. Visualize the future. Set goals and work to accomplish them. Don’t forget to eat, just make sure that you take care of the future as well. I take the Pareto principle as a guideline and devote 80% of my effort towards short-term goals and 20% towards long-term goals. Good luck.
